Los: So welcome to another episode of Round the Block Talk. I'm your host Los and today I am honored to have Claudio Garcia (sp), one of Colorado's best sales reps in the state. When I say the best I mean literally the best. Number one sales rep at every company that he has ever, ever blessed his skills on. Welcome!
Claudio: Thank you. Appreciate you having me.
Los: Today's discussion is going to be about why is it so important that your sales and marketing work together and harmoniously. A lot of people think that as long as you have good marketing the rest will come in. A lot of people think as long as you have great sales people the rest will be doing it itself and success will come after that. Claudio, what are your top reasons why you think they should be working together and harmoniously, your marketing and sales?
Claudio: Because they feed each other. One feeds off of the other but both are trying to capture the same objective and that's capture the sale and increase revenue for the business. The big disconnect that you see these days are communication amongst the departments, such as sales and marketing. Marketing can have a vision but if your sales reps don't see out the same lenses you're not going to be successful. It's one of those things that you have to find and making units and get your team to believe that everybody has the same vision. That's pretty key.
Los: So what is the relationship between marketing and sales? You had a good little explanation of what that is.
Claudio: Yes. So marketing is your gun and your sales reps are your bullets. Marketing can point and put you in target but it takes guts to pull the trigger and hit the target. If you have a great marketing team and if that sales team... it's like having a gun with no bullets. You're not going to hit your target. You're not going to be where you want to be so that's the importance of them. I call them the gun and the bullet.
Los: I love it. So how is it... do you feel that every business should have a sales component and a marketing component, or does a business just need one or the other?
Claudio: No. Some businesses… like if you’re a taco stand you can sustain your business by just selling taco. They sell themselves. But if you want to separate yourself from your competition it's going to take some creativity. You're going to need creative sales reps, creative marketing team. Whether that's an inside marketing team or you go outside to a company like yours, which I recommend, it's all about... the importance of that department is key to success because you have to have both otherwise you're just going to become stagnant and eventually file for bankruptcy because you didn't generate your revenue.
Los: Is it possible to have really bad messaging and have really good sales?
Claudio: Yes. I mean it's possible you could have bad messaging and decent sales it just depends what that bad message is relating to. The problem with that is your looking at creating a bad image for future sales. You might not get a lot of repeat business, right? The two things that I would say is communication is key, both ways, marketing to sales and sales to marketing. If both of them are not in unison or not communicating well you're going to have a dysfunctional group and dysfunctional means less money. Your campaigns are going to be weak and your customers are going to be able to identify that. You can always tell who the desperate sales person is or the desperate marketer is because they're pushing something on instead of being more persuasive, coming from more of an advisor standpoint as opposed to a consultant. There is a big difference between someone who tells you what to do and someone who tells you what you need to do.
Los: Claudio, what do you think is an actionable item that a person watching this video can do right now? Let's say they're a business owner. What can they do to improve their harmonious relationship between marketing and sales, right now after they watch this video?
Claudio: Hustle their honesty to themselves. Is your sales activity build? Are you true to your sales model?...
